The Love Hearts

Did you know that emotions are actually controlled by a structure in the brain called the amygdala? How the heart became known as a symbol of love dates back to the 13th century when a painter depicted a proposal. In the painting, the man was holding a pinecone, which is similar to the shape of the heart, to symbolize offering his "heart" to the woman. Since then, various depictions of the pine cone as a heart evolved, incrementally changing how the cone looked, the bottom being carved out more to reflect the two symmetrical halves that we see today.
